A famous fresco painting of the Madonna and Child in Orvieto. |
Another fresco in poor condition, but the alabaster window survives. |
The Virgin and Child |
This is the ceiling in the transept crossing of Orvieto's Cathedral. |
This is the baroque organ in the left transept of the Cathedral. |
The nave of the Cathedral. Italian Cathedrals all have those plastic stack chairs in the church. Pews are fairly American, I guess! |
This is the "Holy Corporal" that is reserved in Orvieto. It is said that many centuries ago a priest began to doubt the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and he eventually stopped saying Mass. One day when he was just attending Mass, the Host started to bleed human blood which dripped on this corporal. The priest's faith was restored and he began to say Mass again and Orvieto finally got this corporal. |
This fresco to the right of the "Holy Corporal," depicts Saint Thomas Aquinas presenting his composition for the Feast of Corpus Christi to the pope. Saint Thomas Aquinas wrote those prayers here in Orvieto. |
