May 10th!!!

After an early Mass at Saint Peter's, Fr. Luke and I took some time to further explore the magnificent Basilica. We stopped for a cappuccino at a nearby Coffee Bar. While Starbuck's is unknown here, coffee bars abound and they are quite good. We also paid a visit to the Dominican Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, the nearby Gamarelli Clerical Clothing Store, and the ancient library that formerly belonged to the Dominican School that pre-dated the Angelicum University. In 1870 the Italian State confiscated the library and now it is available for scholarly research. Later that afternoon, I visited the 4th century Basilica of San Clemente. For several centuries it was the home for a college of Irish Dominican Students. While in the area of the scavi or excavations under the church, I ran into a group of German students. I had my habit and black cappa on and as I was going around a corner I could hear some students doming the other way. Just when one young boy, fourteen years old or so, saw me, he was quite startled, yelped, and covered his mouth in great surprise. It was a very, very funny moment. I looked at him, smiled, motioned with my hand, and said, "Come, come; I won't bite you!" I do not know what he was thinking, but the expression on his face was priceless!

This was certainly another good day in a beautiful city -- La Bella Roma!
