Una Gita a Orvieto e Todi!
This morning I joined a gito or trip of the University students from the Angelicum to Orvieto and Todi, about 90 minutes away from Rome. Both towns are built on hilltops that require the use of trams to get from the parking lot to the city center. Orvieto is a fabulous town with a magnificent Cathedral. Todi is much smaller and the Cathedral is not as interesting, but the views were quite stunning. The unfortunate thing is that it is impossible to capture the beauty of a place like Orvieto in a few photos. However, I can assure you that this is a place that should be on anyone's tour destinations if they come to Rome!
Fr. Robert Christian and another student from the Angelicum are walking down a side street in Orvieto towards the Cathedral. |
The Cathedral is built with strips of different colored stones. Interesting! |
This is the bishop's throne in the Cathedral of Orvieto. I would say that it is of fairly recent origin. |
This is the Epistle Side of the Sanctuary. The paintings are not in good condition, but they do afford some idea of what it must have been like when new. |
Here I am looking down the length of the Cathedral towards the sanctuary. |
Many of the windows in Orvieto are made of alabaster. Cardinal Mahoney used alabaster for the windows of the new Los Angelese Cathedral of Our Lady, Queen of the Angeles. |
